45TH ANNUAL MERRIE MONARCH HULA FESTIVAL
3RD ANNUAL MAY DAY LEI DAY FESTIVAL
Date: May 6
Time: 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Place: The Historic Palace Theater, Hilo
This beautiful aloha-filled event is free of charge and celebrates the Hawaiian art form of lei making. The festival features a spectacular lei display, lei contest, live music and hula on stage with local musicians, vintage film clips, a silent auction of the lei, and interactive participation with visitors. The event concludes with a sing-along of "May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii" accompanied by the theater's historic pipe organ. Call: (808) 934-7010.

ANNUAL KONA ORCHID SOCIETY'S MOTHER'S DAY SHOW
Date: Friday May 11 & Saturday May 12
Time: 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Place: Hale Halawai County Park Bldg., Alii Drive, downtown Kailua-Kona
Orchid lovers as well as Mother's Day shoppers will find a wide selection of island-grown orchids including new hybrids, exotic species, and orchid varieties to suit any microclimate. Most vendors will ship to the Mainland. Also, local artisans with orchid art, greeting cards, photography, pottery and apparel. Oahu

WAIKIKI ARTFEST
Date: May 19 & 20
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Place: Kapiolani Park (directly across from Honolulu Zoo)
Featuring the art and handcrafted products of more than 75 Hawaii artists including all types of jewelry, clothing, stained glass, ceramics, quilts and bags, wood products, soaps and candles. HAWAII BOOK AND MUSIC FESTIVAL
Date: May 19 & 20
Place: Honolulu Hale (City Hall), Downtown Honolulu
Ten thousand people attended this unique new annual festival last year. It’s "A Celebration of Story and Song," with 300 national and Hawaii authors, poets, playwrights, storytellers, songwriters, performers, and musicians in 100 events. There are Pavilions dedicated to books and authors, Hawaiian culture, Food and Cookbooks, Storytelling, Arts and Crafts, and a Music Stage. There’s a special Children’s Festival, with a Children’s Stage, and a Meet the Children’s Authors Pavilion. Author signings and books sold at Publishers’, and Booksellers’ booths. Maui

FREE WHALE AND OCEAN INFORMATION
Date: Through May 15
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Place: McGregor Point Lookout - (Honoapiilani Hwy near Maalaea)
Where else can you pull off the highway and see whale baleen, whale lice and other interesting whale displays? Pacific Whale Foundation's (PWF) Ocean Outreach Van is at this scenic lookout daily with interesting whale displays and free information about whales. PWF's Marine Research naturalists will be on hand to help you spot whales from one of the best shore-based whalewatching locations on Maui. Free. Call: (808) 879-8860 or visit the PWF site

 

NTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF CANOES
Date: May 12 - 26
Place: Front Street, Lahaina
"Maui's Signature Cultural Heritage Event". This two-week program is dedicated to cultural revival and brings master carvers and canoe-makers from all over the Pacific. Together, these native artisans create canoes from wood logs and demonstrate traditional skills such as surfboard shaping, drum making, tiki carving, and Hawaiian house thatching. On the closing weekend, the canoes are carried them through Lahaina Town in a big parade along Front Street and ceremonially launched into the ocean. The event closes with an island food and music festival at Kamehameha Iki Beach Park on May 26th. Free admission to most events. Call: (808) 667-9175 or visit their site .

FRANK DE LIMA
Date: May 18 & 19
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Place: McCoy Studio Theater, Maui Arts & Cultural Center (Central Maui)
Frank De Lima is one of Hawaii's most popular and beloved comedians, an award-winning comic who has been entertaining local residents and tourists alike with his zany parodies, outrageous sense of humor, and spontaneous creativity. Frank personifies and celebrates Hawaii's diverse cultures (his own ethnic background is Portuguese, Hawaiian, Irish, Chinese, English, Spanish and Scottish - "Chop Suey Nation," as he says) and integrates them into his comedic routines and musical parodies.
